George L. Smith Jr.

  George L. Smith Jr., 96, of Danville, passed away December 15, 2019 at home.  Visitation will be from 11:00 – 1:00pm on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Kruger-Coan-Pape Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams Street in Danville.  Service will be at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 19 at Kruger-Coan-Pape Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Stearns Cemetery

  George was born June 14, 1923 in St. Joseph, Illinois to George and Hazel (Bartlett) Smith Sr.  He served in the US Army during WWII, fought in the Philippines.  He received a Purple Heart, and four bronze stars.  George was a heavy equipment operator at Local 841 for many years.  He enjoyed his many years of working, and also enjoyed working on antiques and square dancing.  He loved spending time with his family.

  George married Maxine Word in December 1945, and enjoyed 59 years together until her passing in 2004.  George then married Jane Frye in August 2006, she passed in December 2017.  George is survived by children:  Donald (Sandra) Smith, and Rita Smith; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren; sister: Pat Hughes; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Martha Wiesener; 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
