Demetra "Tula" Kronas Obituary

Demetra A. “Tula” Mechalas-Kronas, 92, of Danville, passed away Monday, November 2, 2020 at home.  There will be a private service, with burial at Springhill Cemetery.

Tula was born July 31, 1928 in Evanston, Illinois to Evangeline Tsingunakis and Gust Mechalas of Crete Greece.  She lived in Georgetown Illinois where she graduated from Georgetown High School, and later graduated from Utterbeck Brown Business College.  She worked for Danville School District 118 for 28 years, and afterwards worked and helped her brother Manny Mechalas at Modern Machine Shop in Danville.  She also owned and ran the Mainstream Restaurant in Georgetown for many years.  She enjoyed being a mother but most of all being a grandmother to Katy.

Tula married in Danville, Illinois on June 26, 1949 to Nicholas Theodore Kronas.  They had a full life together for 46 years until his death on December 30, 1995.  She leaves behind a daughter Dina (Michael) Rand; other “daughters” Jackie Ledwon and Cheryl Barth; Yiayia (grandmother) to Katy Rand; sister Elaine Mechalas Polizos; nieces and nephews: Theodora (Jacob) Russell-Espinosa, Ted (Barb) Kronas, Andrea (Doug) Polizos-Walker, Christine (Chris) Mechalas-Tempesta Van Der Linden, Gust Mechalas, Peter (Kirsey) Mechalas, CherylAn Mechalas Sokol-Byrne, Dale (Lisa) Mechalas, Tamara (Tom) Mechalas-Doyle, Brian Mechalas, Kevin Mechalas, Alayne (Vito) Mechalas-Bianco, Garrin (Heather) Mechalas, John (Heidi) Mechalas, Susan Mechalas-Gutterridge, Nicholas (Leigh) Poulos, Ted (Carine) Poulos, and the Marines Family: Dean, Jamie, Antigone, Nikki, Bessie, Michael, Gregory, Pene, Mari, Stephanie; great nieces-nephews: Anne Marie (Jeremy) Kronas-Curtiss, Amy (JR) Kronas-Jones, Maria Espinosa, Galena Polizos, Julia Polizos, Trace Tempesta, Troy Tempesta, Vito Bianco, Niko, Bianco, Geno Bianco, Tess Mechalas, Alec Mechalas, Alexis Mechalas, Kayla Mechalas, Toni Douglas, Jim (Stephanie) Demos, Bill Demos, Stasia (Matt) Demos-Mills, James Petrou, Bill Petrou, Nicole (Gabe) Poulos-Tucker, Stephanie (Adam) Poulos-Beckemmer, Alexander (Brooke) Poulos, Nathan Poulos, and Johnathan Poulos.  Great-Great Nieces and nephews: William Curtiss, Lilly Anne Jones, Alyannia Douglas, Jordyn Douglas, Dean Gunnin, Nicholas Demos, AJ Demos, Lucas Demos, and John Silas Mills; cousins: James Demos, Andy (Wanda) Demos, John Demos, and Kelly (George) Mavres-Demetrakoptoulos; Nouna (Godmother) to Nicholas Wassef, CherylAn Mechalas Sokol-Byrne, Tina Rena Underwood-Frymyer, Christina Makos-Gritton; and so many more family and close friends to name.  All whom she never forgot, in America, in Greece and beyond.

Tula was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas T. Kronas, mother Evangeline Tsigunakis-Mechalas, father Gust Mechalas, Mother-in-law Pauline Demos-Kronas, father-in-law Theodore Nicholas Kronas, brothers: Bryon Mechalas, Emmanuel Mechalas, Harry (Sonny) Mechalas, sister-in-law Mary Kronas-Russell, brother-in-law William Kronas, Aunt Tasia Demos, and Uncle William Demos.

 Tula was a member of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church (Danville) and Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church (Champaign).  She also attended the Saint Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church (Urbana).  She belonged to many organizations which kept her young at heart;  Masonic member 74 years (Georgetown, Danville and Champaign/Urbana area), retired secretaries District 118 Danville Schools, Money Minders, and Business Women to name just a few.

She loved her church and every month she sent out a monthly newsletter which she provided updates and information to all those who belonged to or had ties with the Saint Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Community.  She made sure everyone was included.  For many decades she was a Sunday School teacher.
