Gary Waterstradt of Danville passed away at home on August 21, 2020.
Gary was born on December 29, 1950 to Henry and Mary (Nolan) Waterstradt in Danville.
Gary is survived by his wife Carolyn (Day) and his three children, Eric, Elizabeth, Katie and one wonderful grandson, Turner. Gary also is survived by two siblings, John of California and Donna Dines of Danville.
Gary grew up in Danville and graduated from Danville High School in 1969. After graduation Gary was drafted into the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division, 2nd of the 17th Cavalry and spent one tour in Vietnam. During his service Gary received several recognitions of his professionalism and meritorious service including the Bronze Star. His modesty as a proud veteran also was reflected in his pursuits for his hometown.
After returning home Gary was hired at the City of Danville from 1973 until his retirement in 2002. His employment encompassed many areas for the City including Director of Parks and Recreation where he oversaw the municipal pool, 80+ recreational men’s and women’s softball teams, a pre-school program, and the Little Vermilion Fall Festival. In 1989 he became a City Wide Planner in the City Planning and Development Department. In that role he was instrumental in working with the Danville Zoning Commission, Downtown Danville, Inc. and the Danville Renaissance Board to name a few. Among his many achievements he played a key role in the purchase of land for Winter Park, the Urban Renewal area of Main Street which became Towne Center and the development and zoning of land allowing for the construction of Lowes and Walmart.
Gary continued his love of the parks with his involvement with his children through baseball, softball, soccer and Indian Princesses. His love of family was reflected in his dedication to the parks and the activities that surrounded them.
A special mention to the organizers of the deck parties, the grass mowers, the ramp builders, and everyone who came over to keep Gary company, you definitely showed him an outpouring of love, family and friendship. A private burial service will be held at the National Cemetery on August 27, 2020. A Celebration of Life will follow at the American Legion Post 210, 201 Prospect Place in Danville at 4:00 p.m. so that friends may join the family. Social distancing and masks will be available. Tributes to Gary can be made to the charity of your choice or to the Vermilion County Animal Shelter Foundation.
