Mary Elder Obituary

Mary Elder, 83, longtime Danville resident, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Per her wishes, she was cremated. Graveside burial of Mary's ashes will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at 2pm at Pape Botanical Gardens (across from Kruger Coan Pape Funeral Home, on the east side of Hazel). A Celebration of Mary's life will be from 3-5pm at Kruger Coan Pape Funeral Home immediately following the burial. 

   Mary was born on January 10, 1937 in Danville to Coy and Opal (Reynolds) York. She attended Danville schools and graduated from Danville High School in 1955.  Mary graduated from Lakeview College of Nursing in 1958 as a Registered Nurse. Mary enjoyed her work as a RN and worked at Lakeview Memorial Hospital for over twenty years, Pleasant Meadows in Chrisman for fifteen years, and International Nursing Home in Danville. She also enjoyed a role as a driver for the Danville City Bus for a period of time.  An avid reader, Mary could often be found curled up with a good book and she enjoyed watching Cub’s baseball games.

   Mary wed Phillip Eugene Elder on June 22, 1958 and the two shared fifty-six years of marriage together before Phillip’s passing in 2014.  She leaves behind their four daughters: Janet (Harley Ray) Ragle, Jennifer (Phillip) Cohee, Jeanne (Ziad) Aldroubi, and Judith (Mark) Richey; twelve grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren with number 8 great grandchild on the way; two brothers: Richard (Suzanne) York and Robert York (Pam); and several nieces, nephews, and close friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister Lois Hargis (Everett).

   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Lakeview College of Nursing, Scholarship Fund-Danville Campus, 903 N.
