Shirley was born on June 7, 1929 at home in Tilton, Illinois to Frank “Shorty” and Anna (Olsen) Cancil.  She attended Tilton Grade School, and graduated Danville High School.  She worked for Illinois Bell in Danville, owned a dress shop in California, trucked with her husband Floyd, and they also ran a ranch together in California and in Kingman, Indiana.  She loved to dance, and was very dedicated to her family.

While working for Illinois Bell, she got connected to Floyd Simpson who was working the desk at Chanute Air Force base in Rantoul, where he asked her out and the rest is history.  They married October 20, 1951 in Tilton; Floyd passed in 2017.  Surviving are four children: Sherry Cummings of Brentwood, CA, Sandy (Martin) Shellhammer of Concord, CA, Steven Simpson of Jupiter, FL, and Scott Simpson of Fair Oaks, CA; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister Carol (Arthur) Riley of Jensen Beach, FL; a special niece and nephew Verna and David Quick with whom she resided; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, baby sister Jacqueline; and brothers: Marvin, Frank, Warren, and Leslie.
