Bill was drafted into the US Army and proudly served from February 5, 1953 until January 21, 1955 during The Korean War. Following his time in the service, Bill returned home where he began working as a machine operator at Allith Prouty for a short time. In 1959, Bill began his career as a Danville City Police Officer; he would continue this until July 1, 1982 when he would retire as a Lieutenant.

Bill later married Phyllis (Childs) Welsch on September 29, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Danville, and the two have been by one another’s side ever since.
Bill leaves behind his wife Phyllis; his two daughters: Lori Flessner (Ken Hill) and Linda (Brian) Lonneman; four step-children: Kristi (Matt) Swingle, Scott (Holly) Abbott, Lori (Kevin) Allison, and Kelli Miller; a son-in-law Kenneth LaMar; eight grandchildren: Grant (Chloe) LaMar, Ayden LaMar (Elena Bartzis), Todd (Cassie) Flessner, Ryan (Laura) Flessner, Kristina (Matt) Guire, Andrew Pfrank, Sarah Lonneman, and Katie Lonneman; seven step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren with one on the way, several step great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren with another one on the way.
