Lula Powell Obituary

Lula May Powell, 93 of Tilton, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020 surrounded by her family, at her home. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Kruger Coan Pape Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams Street in Danville, with social distancing and IDPH guidelines being followed. Private family services will take place at a later time, with burial at Atherton cemetery next to her husband Kelly.

Lula was born on February 12, 1927 in Danville to William and Edna (Henderson) Crippin. She attended Danville grade schools through the eighth grade, and later went back and earned her GED.   For a short time, during WWII, Lula worked at a sewing factory, making uniforms, and briefly at a jewelry store.

Lula married Kelly Powell on March 23, 1946 and the two settled down and had twelve children. The two were married for only twenty-five years before he passed in 1971.

Lula enjoyed reading, doing her crossword puzzles, and jigsaw puzzles. She also loved spending time with family, celebrating the holidays, and watching television (typically CSI or another crime show).  She was a great cook, and enjoyed sharing “her way” with all the kids.

Lula leaves behind nine of her children: Raymond (Phyllis) Powell, Kalley (Nancy) Powell, Kevin (Rachel) Powell, Paul Powell, Steven (Kelly) Powell, Chester (Cheri) Powell, Mark Powell, Emily Bencomo, and Carol (Kyle) Looper; two daughter-in-laws: Sheila Powell and Elizabeth Powell; her last surviving brother Tom Crippin; and 28 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Kelly; two sons: Darrell and Brian Powell; a daughter Kathy Powell; a sister Dorothy; and her brothers: Milton, Raymond, James, William, and Clarence; and 2 grandchildren:  Christopher and Karissa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lula’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Messages and memories may be left on our website at www.KrugerCoanPape.com, or on the Kruger-Coan-Pape Funeral Home Facebook page.
